In the late 1980s, Canon introduced a revolutionary service tool that allows users to print out a range of different parts for their Canon printer. The parts include a color photocopy mock-up, toner cartridge, fuser roller assembly, and many others. The tool also has an option to print out a service manual showing all of the individual pieces as well as how they fit together and what they do... A new version of this useful device is now available for download. Scanner, fax, copier or other models may be used by typing their names. Many Canon printers use an SMC or SPC device to switch between the manufacturer's factory settings and printer-specific settings (manufacturer defaults). These devices can be easily replaced with generic equivalents (mainly parity checksum) that are published by many third-party companies. For example, the SMC-58XX series check contains easily configured SRAM (aka PROM), that can be set to specific values by sending simple ASCII strings in the serial interface. There are also freely available tools for this, like SPC/SMC Editor. If there is no manufacturer support for your printer, you can still fix it, if you have some knowledge in electronics and access to electronic scrap or broken printers. Technical information regarding disassembly and repairing of particular problems with printers are often documented at the corresponding wiki page.
